The Cain-Gingrich Debate

I didn't watch this live, because two great SEC games were on; this video is courtesy of The Right Scoop.

  1. I have it loading on C-Span right now, but will not watch it until after I pick up my Mom & Sister at church.

  2. I won't be able to watch it until this afternoon. We're about to leave to take our granddaughter back to her Mom and Dad's. :)

  3. We watched it last night. Newt is my favorite of the hopefuls closely followed by Cain. I think either man would make a good president and I have confidence that both would follow through on their most important campaign promises. I thought the format was so much better than the typical debate - they didn't attack, didn't have to cram their policies or opinions into a 30 second sound byte. I felt I got to know the policies and personalities of both men much better. This is the type of debate we need to have more of, pairing up different candidates - even 3 would work. Then have them all together for one large debate so we can see how they play off each other.

    Anway, that's my 2 cents.

  4. PS - I love it that Cain is having his chief of staff hand out a 'Journalistic Ethics' paper to members of the press who keep shouting out questions about the so-called "harrassment scandal".

  5. Well, that was a breath of fresh air - less a debate between rivals than a discussion between colleagues.

I think Newt actually got the better of it, not because he out-argued, but because many people who were not considering him may have seen this and been impressed.

I really did enjoy Herman's last question, however.

  6. I enjoyed that "debate" as well. Normally I do not pay attention to the "debates," because they are just the original form of "reality" television -- designed more to show people going "gotcha" then to actually tell anyone anything.

I thought by giving the two chance to speak was great. Bot Gingrich and Cain had many good points. I think dong this with two people is best, I don't know if a third could really be added. Do "debates" such as this in a round-robin format would work. Perhaps even two rounds, so everyone can go back to something that came up in another debate.

Yeah, I enjoyed Cain's last question. I think Gingrich did, too.

I agree with Dances, I think Gingrich probably did better by a hair -- but I thought they both did very well.

  7. Dances and Matt, blogger "disappeared" my original comment but I too mentioned that I LOVED Cain's last question!

    :-D

  8. I'm sorry florrie, but I can never forgive Newt's treatment of his wife. And, believe me, I'm no paragon of virtue in that respect. Still, I'd like to see him stand up like a man and admit to his mistakes. Then, I might consider him viable.

  9. Luther, this is going to sound cold-hearted but...I don't care about his past personal relationships. That doesn't have anything to do with his ability to run the country. Obama sounds like he is a good dad and husband but that hasn't stopped him from making what are, in my opinion, terrible decisions for our country.

No one can know the true inside story of a marriage except for the 2 people in it. It *does* sound like he was a heartless bastard towards one of his former wives; I haven't heard the other side of the story. Do I wish he had a long-term happy marriage to one person? Of course! And his past mistakes would matter to me if he were counseling people on their life choices but he is not.

  10. Luther, FWIW, I saw this piece which Instapundit linked to a few days ago. Apparently Newt's daughter remembers things a bit different.

I'd say this might be evidence that the whole narrative of Gingrich's treatment of his ex-wife-to-be is yet another left wing fabrication.

Of course, maybe Newt's daughter is lying. But with her mother very much alive, that would be a pretty cold and sick thing to do.

  11. Good find, Lewy - I'd read something to this effect recently, but not nearly so detailed and believable as this.

    Thanks for posting it.

  12. florrie, you're not being cold hearted, I completely understand your point of view given the urgency of the situation. Too, given Lewy's link (thanks Lewy), I see that there is ample room for ambiguity as to what Newt did or didn't do at the time of his divorce. I guess I'm old fashioned in that I like my leaders to have the integrity to be responsible for their actions, and maybe Newt has been. Besides, that is a hopelessly outdated view I realize. So, I'll just fade back into the woodwork and see how it all plays out.

  13. I have that same "outdated" view too, Luther. But in this case, I would even vote for Ron Paul if he was the one with the best chance to beat Obama.

On a side note...I see Gloria Allred is now representing a woman who has come out of the woodwork with new allegations against Cain. When the original allegations came out a couple weeks ago, I said to Tom "Enter Gloria Allred from stage left in 4...3...2...".

Heh, right again ;-) Let the high-tech lynching proceed!

  14. "...I would even vote for Ron Paul... "

Oh noes!! While holding his nose and doing the same I guess. :)

Good catch on Allred, inevitable I suppose.

  15. She's nothing if not an opportunist.

If these charges are fabricated, shame shame.

  16. That's how she makes a living, being an opportunist. I wonder in my naiveness, at times, how people such as her, J. Jackson, Sharpton, M. Moore, and the whole long long list of such leaches sleep at night. They believe their own BS is the only answer I can come up with. Fabrication they would consider the least of their sins. Islamic in a way, Taqiyya, if you get my drift. Of course, one could include most all politicians under that rubric. Which is why I will hold my nose and vote for Joe the Plumber versus the present occupant of the White House. I guess that's why I'm not so interested in the debates, as my state, and myself, have so little influence on who will receive the nomination. At this point it is 'anyone' over the JEM and his OWS crew.

  17. Well said, Luther, well said.

I just read on Drudge how Sarkozy and BO just trashed Bibi during the G8, not realizing their mikes were still on.

They are a disgraceful pair of fools.

I'm so afraid of what is happening (Iran) and the attitudes of our so-called leaders must give our allies in Israel no confidence at all.
