Tragedy In Afghanistan

Sadness and grief this morning at the heartbreaking news from Afghanistan...

The Associated Press has learned that more than 20 Navy SEALs from the unit that killed Osama bin Laden were among those lost in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan.

The operators from SEAL Team Six were flown by a crew of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment. That's according to one current and one former U.S. official. Both spoke on condition of anonymity because families are still being notified of the loss of their loved ones.

One source says the team was thought to include 22 SEALs, three Air Force air controllers, seven Afghan Army troops, a dog and his handler, and a civilian interpreter, plus the helicopter crew.

The sources thought this was the largest single loss of life ever for SEAL Team Six, known as the Naval Special Warfare Development Group.

  2. Oh, this is just devastating.

I hope and pray we can bring our servicemen and women home soon.

God rest their souls and help their families through their grief.

  3. Sad and devastating a loss to be sure.

However, I am a little disturbed about someone inside (apparently) running off at the mouth to the AP. THAT is a no-no. Just not done. Secret means secret and all that.
It's possible the source was an Afghan ally, which makes a difference ... I'd be disappointed to find out it was an American SEAL.

  4. In mitigation: The piece does cite "... one current and one former U.S. official. " ...which can mean appointed government bureaucrat cake eating civilian dickhead...who should never have had a clearance to even know what's next in the mess hall.

    Amen to that.

This amounts to a loss of an entire SEAL class.

  6. What terrible news. My condolences to the SEALs unit, the families and friends of those who died, and all the brave American and Allied forces.

  7. This is just awful. At Powerline they're wondering if this might have been a setup by the Pakistani ISI. I tend to doubt it - from what I've heard, the Seals were on a quick reaction mission to help another unit pinned down in a fire-fight. I doubt Pakistan was in the loop on the deployment - though there were some Afghans who knew (and some who were on board with the Seals).
