For Music Lovers Everywhere

OK, this really isn't a video, but it is an enjoyable piece of fine guitar playing.

  1. I friggin' QUIT!! Damned Blogger still will NOT LET ME link.

Only comments from now on, folks, it seems I have nothing original to say, according to asshole blooger.com

  2. DWT - you know I kinda felt that would happen. The problem you had just seemed a little weird to be a Linux issue.

I assume you're on windows now - right?

OK - so there must be something strange going on in the settings or something.

    Let's figure it out.

Sadly, I have to run right now - date night with the wife - but if you can just do this: tell me exactly (as you can, reasonably) how you try to embed the link, and what happens when you do.

I'm pretty confident I can get to the bottom of what the problem is.

  3. Lewy, I go to the compose page, I type. I try to add a 'Ctrl V' link and blooody blogger.com simply will not do anything at all. I mean NOTHING appears.

    It used to work.

  4. Oh, and do not ever be sad or apologetic about a date night with the wife.

Maybe if I'd done a few more of those I would not be twice-divorced.

  5. DWT - you are in the "Compose" tab, and then you select some text, and you click the link button, and it puts up a dialog box where you enter the URL - and nothing happens? Is that it?

  6. Ah, she ain't ready yet. ;) No worries 8P

  7. Lewy, I do 'Ctrl C' to collect a link then 'Ctrl V' to add it
But in Blogger it does nothing.

  8. It just seems random. Nothing was changed to allow Barry to comment, so ari's comment should have been okay.

    Weird, dude.

  9. DWT -- What browser are you using? IIRC when I was using Safari, keyboard shortcuts did not work -- I had to right click and use that menu. Try that.

  10. yes, try using the right-click method - also - does Ctl-V work everywhere else? In other words, does it work in the comment posting block?

Matt - FWIW I just tried using Safari (on a Mac) on another blog; Ctl-V worked fine for me.

  11. The reason I do not use Safari anymore is that besides what I already mentioned, comments did not appear in the sidebar on the main page -- but they did on the back pages (pages that show comments). Strange stuff.

  12. I am just using IE, as it came with the Windows 7.

also - does Ctl-V work everywhere else? In other words, does it work in the comment posting block?

Yes - the above was done that way.

It seems everything works except when I try to do a post and add a link in it.

  13. As a workaround, can you right click and use the "Paste" option on the pop-up menu? Or does right click not work either?

And this is the exact behavior you experienced under ubuntu linux as well?

If it is, then there's something mighty weird going on... which, ultimately, must have something to do with the interaction of your Google account and Blogger - because that's the only common thread between your setup on Ubuntu and your setup on Windows.

Actually, Barry's comment was stuck in moderation too. I published it yesterday from blogger limbo-land.

  15. DWT, when I can't get something to work, I generally find I'm missing a small step somewhere. Let me cover all the little steps. Maybe it will help; who knows? :)

In "compose" mode you click on the "link" feature in the ribbon at the top of the posting box. A new window appears. The first box is labeled "text". You type in what text you want highlighted. The second box is where you paste in your URL. Then hit OK.

In the HTML mode, click on the link feature. A new window will appear. Delete the text in the box, then paste in your URL. Hit OK. The link HTML will appear in the post you are creating, with the cursor blinking between the ><. This is where you type the text you want hightlighted. Like this: >type text here<.

If this is exactly what you're doing (and I'm sure it probably is) I have no earthly idea why blogger is being such a brat. I'll do some research and see what I can find for a solution...one of us should be able to figure it out...

Ah. I was wondering why I missed Barry's second comment before. What is confusing -- although it makes sense -- is that the comments post to their orignal times, not when they are cleared.

Or you can just type your whole comment and then highlight the word you want as the text over the link. For example, in the sentence above if you wanted the link to appear when you clicked on the word "whole" you would highlight the word "whole" then click on the link button, delete the http and paste the URL. The code will automatically do the rest. No need to go back and type text between the ><.

  18. lady red, thanks for posting that barry's comment had been stuck in moderation - that explains everything now.

I left the settings such that comments on threads older than 90 days will go into moderation - if that's OK we can leave it, or we can change it.

  19. 'this is the exact behavior you experienced under ubuntu linux as well?'

Yes, exactly the same - but it certainly worked on my late (and very deeply missed)old XP machine.

'there's something mighty weird going on... which, ultimately, must have something to do with the interaction of your Google account and Blogger - because that's the only common thread between your setup on Ubuntu and your setup on Windows.'

So, there for I am going to kill this account, and try coming in with another name on another email address.

    We'll see what happens.

  20. Hey - DWT: Here's a very simple test you can do which will help me figure out what is going on.

Specifically, it will tell me if there is an interaction with your Google account or not.

Go to this page: link. A few lines down there is a (small) button labeled "prompt". Click it. A dialog box will come up asking you what your favorite color is. Try pasting (Ctrl-V) somthing - anything - in that dialog box. See if it works. Let me know.

    What is this about?

A comment box is an HTML thingy called a "text box", which is part of a "form".

The link dialog box in the main "Compose" posting page activates a "prompt" dialog box, which is a javascript thingy.

This is Too Much Information prolly but the bottom line is that they are differnt things, so the fact that you can use Ctrl-V in the one (comment box) and not the other (link dialog box) is interesting.

I want to see if you can post in any "prompt" dialog box at all, or if it is specific to our posting page.

Thanks in advance for humoring me.

  21. Lewy, it worked there, AFTER I told IE to allow the webpage to use a scripted window.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Well, I don't know if this proves anything, but at least it allowed me to make a new ID, although of course that new ID can't post to TCKT.

Anyone interested will be happy to know that TCKT finally appears on search pages (at least Dogpile)

    ReplyDelete
  23. DWT - I take it you were able to use Ctrl-V with the "prompt" button at the link I gave you, after you told IE it was OK.

I also take it that IE _doesn't_ ask you for permission before putting up the "link" dialog box when trying to post at TCKT - right?

Is it just Ctrl-V that doesn't work in the "link" dialog box?

Can you right click and then paste in the "link" dialog box?

In fact - will it let you type anything at all in that "link" dialog box?

What's the email addr associated with your new ID? We'll send Mr. Damage an invite to join (and hence to post).

I'm hoping we can get to the bottom of the problem without you needing to actually change accounts.

That said, it will be damned interesting if Mr. Damage can past links and Mr. D.W. Typos cannot.

  24. DWT - send me or Matt or Fay or lady red (or all of us) the email addr of Mr. Damage. My email is lewykatorz (at) gmail (dot) com.

  25. Messrs Typos and Damage - check your email.

  26. Lewy, I did check, and am feeling all chatty, but not too authorial, through no fault of my own.

    Anyway, if someone would like, they can do a post with this link;
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battles_of_Lexington_and_Concord

And maybe title it - 'Twas There The Embattled Farmers Stood'

  27. Umm, I did a standard misquote of Emerson, above - it shuold have been 'Here Once The Embattled Farmers Stood'
